Cupra officially begins mass production of the first fully electric 2022 Cupra Born at the Zwickau plant in Germany. Cupra is sold by the Spanish manufacturer SEAT.
The production of this Cupra model marks the beginning of a new era.
With 100% Cupra DNA and an emotional design inspired by the neighborhood of Barcelona, El Born, the first Cupra Born models come off the production line, proving that the performance of sports cars and electrification match perfectly.
The Zwickau plant is the Volkswagen Group’s first plant for 100% electric vehicles and is considered to be the largest and most efficient EV plant in Europe. With a daily production of up to 1,400 vehicles, the German factory has an annual production capacity of about 330,000 electric cars. In addition to the Cupra Born, the factory produces four other models, the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4, the Audi Q4 e-Tron, and the Q4 Sportback e-Tron.
Cupra Born is equipped with a powertrain of 150 kW (204 HP) powered by a 58 kWh battery which allows autonomy of up to 424 km according to the WLTP cycle
2022 Cupra Born is the first model of the Cupra brand to follow the concept of reducing CO2 emissions, whereby energy from renewable sources is also used in the production chain. Some interior parts of this EV are made from recycled materials originating from the Mediterranean Sea, which further contributes to the preservation of the Mediterranean and the environment.
“With its sporty design, Cupra Born is the reason for the company’s transformation and the beginning of Cupra Electric. Production of our first 100% electric model in Europe’s largest electric vehicle factory will provide us with valuable insights into the 2025 electric vehicle production plan.
“Our ambition is to produce more than 500,000 city electric vehicles a year in Spain for various brands of the Group,” Griffiths said.

The first delivery of the 2022 Cupra Born EV is expected to be in early 2022.
