The German car manufacturer Mercedes introduced the EQG concept of the electric G-Class at the 2021 IAA Mobility Show in Munich.
When the current Mercedes G-Class debuted at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2018, the German manufacturer announced that the legendary SUV or G-Wagon, which has been produced since 1979, would be included in the electrification.
We want to inspire our customers to switch to electric mobility with convincing products,” said Markus Schäfer, Daimler AG board of management member and Mercedes-Benz Cars COO. “An icon like the G-Class fulfills this task perfectly.”
These days, the promise from 2018 has been fulfilled. Mercedes presented the 2023 Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class EQG concept to the public at the Munich Motor Show.
EQG SUV Design
The design of The Geländewagen (that’s “terrain vehicle”) has not changed significantly compared to the standard model, so the car is recognizable at first sight.
It visually differs from the version with SUS engines only in some stylistic details that emphasize the “electric character” of the EQG concept.
The basic construction with the classic chassis has been retained, and in order for the EQG to have the properties of a top-of-the-line SUV, the suspension system has been modified only to the extent necessary for the new drive.
2023 Mercedes-Benz Electric G-Class EQG Specs
2023 Mercedes-Benz EV G-Class EQG uses 4 electric motors for propulsion, which are located near the wheels, and between them are two-stage gearboxes (one for each motor/wheel pair).
The front suspension is independent, while the rear is a rigid axle, without which it is difficult to imagine a classic off-road car.
Mercedes has not yet released more detailed technical specifications of the vehicle, although it has been confirmed that the EV G-Class EQG will have a 463-liter trunk space and will descend from the factory lane on 22-inch diameter wheels. The battery range and battery specifications at this moment are not disclosed.
