Australia will replace Kadjar in Renault’s offer, and will be presented to a wider audience in the spring of 2022.

Derived from the Latin word australis, Austral resonates strongly in many European languages, including French. And that is especially important for a brand that is proud of its roots.

According to Sylvia Dos Santos, head of strategy for designing the model name in Renault’s global marketing department, the name Austral combines the liveliness and warmth of the southern hemisphere and calls for research, making it perfect for an SUV. The perfect balance of voices makes it easy to pronounce and gives it a truly international touch.

Australia is part of the brand’s new range of compact SUVs that combine innovative connected technology and deliver eco-driving pleasure. It is 4.51 m long and can comfortably accommodate up to 5 passengers.

The new Renault Austral is in the final stages of development

Prior to the official start of sales of the new model, extensive tests are conducted on our vehicles for months to ensure the highest quality and reliability. Durability tests make it possible to check the reliability and durability of various components.

In these strict conditions, a new engine was developed which is equipped with the new Renault AUSTRAL and on which, for the first time in Renault’s offer, high-efficiency technology of a 48-volt mild petrol hybrid was used.

DEMANDING TESTS FOR THE BEST QUALITY GUARANTEE

The new Renault AUSTRAL is currently undergoing additional tests known as the “Confirmation Runs”. AUSTRAL is in this phase of testing today. In practice, that means that the fleet of about a hundred vehicles will cover two million kilometers.

The new Renault AUSTRAL SUV will now travel to France, Spain, Germany and Romania to verify the correctness of previously obtained values. Thus, 900 drivers will cover 600,000 kilometers in real conditions on the open road, as well as another 1,400,000 kilometers on the race track.

These tests will, for example, make it possible to check the settings of the new CMF-CD3 platform, driving assistance systems, sound insulation or suspension comfort in order to offer our future customers the highest possible quality.

NEW EXTREMELY EFFICIENT ENGINES

Among these values should be mentioned the values of the new 48-volt mild hybrid engine – a true innovation in Renault’s offer.

The new 1200 cm3 three-cylinder engine with turbocharger develops 130 hp at 4500 rpm, while at 1750 rpm it develops 230 Nm of torque. This direct injection engine is made of aluminum to reduce its weight. It uses variable valve opening technology to reduce consumption when the engine is not in use and to develop higher torque and power during more intensive engine use.

The new 48-volt mild hybrid is equipped with a 12V lithium-ion battery, a 12-48V inverter and a 48V starter and enables regenerative braking, additional torque delivery and mains supply.

This allows a consumption of only 5.6 l / 100 km and CO2 emissions of 127 g CO2 / km in the mixed driving cycle according to the WLTP test procedure (data type-approval is underway). Dynamic performance allows the new Renault AUSTRAL to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.8 s and from 80 to 120 km / h in 7.3 s.

In addition to reduced CO2 emissions, this engine is particularly economical because its new particulate filter technology, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves and high-pressure injectors with a pressure of 350 bar, drastically reduce emissions of all harmful gases (PN, HC, CO, NOX).

Thanks to innovative 48-volt mild hybrid technology, the AUSTRAL will be available with a smaller engine that is just as efficient as larger engines.
