Despite making camera sensors for almost all major smartphones, Sony Xperia phones have always lagged a bit in the camera segment, especially in the last couple of years. They also failed to attract customers, despite the impressive specifications. The company took a different approach to smartphones with its $ 2,500 Xperia PRO earlier this year, advertising it as an accessory for photographers and videographers. Nine months later, Sony trying again, though something different with Sony Xperia PRO-I, which has a massive 1-inch camera sensor and a f2-f / 4 variable aperture lens in an attractive package.

While the Xperia PRO-I isn’t the first smartphone to launch with a 1-inch camera sensor or a variable aperture lens, it’s the first to have both. Sony uses a customized version of the 1-inch RX100 VII sensor that can take 12MP photos with a 2.4µ pixel pitch. The thin Zeiss glass lens is located in front of the camera and provides high optical performance. The phone combines autofocus with phase detection with real-time eye autofocus. It also offers continuous high-speed shooting with AF / AE tracking at 20 fps.
For selfies, there is an 8MP f / 2.0 camera on the front. The video recording capabilities of the Xperia PRO-I are equally impressive, as it can record 4K videos at 120 fps!
In addition to the 1-inch 12 MP sensor, the Xperia PRO-I features an ultra-wide 16mm f / 2.2 sensor of 12 MP and a 2x 50mm f / 2.4 12 MP telephoto sensor. For the best possible camera experience, the Xperia PRO-I also has a two-step shutter button. This is accompanied by a circular shortcut button that opens the Videography Pro app that allows you to control white balance, exposure and focus.
The other specifications of the Xperia PRO-I are also impressive. It features a 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz and a touch sampling rate of 240Hz. Inside the phone is a Snapdragon 888 chip, along with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 memory, which can be further expanded with a microSD card. The 4,500 mAh battery powers the phone with 30W fast charging support. Sony has even managed to fit a 3.5mm audio jack, stereo speakers and support for Dolby Atmos here. All this is packed in an IP68 certified body 8.9 mm thick which weighs 211 g.
Sony will also sell a Vlog monitor accessory for the Xperia PRO-I that features a 3.5-inch 720p monitor that attaches to the back of the phone and allows you to capture yourself using a 1-inch camera.
