Apple has announced to the public macOS 12 Monterey early last week. This main version was first discovered during the WWDC21 keynote, back in June. It has since been in beta testing to ensure a seamless experience for the public. Ironically, the stable version seems to have blocked some users ’older Macs, based on complaints on the networks.
According to MacRumors, tweets of angry and worried users who can’t turn on their Macs have surfaced online. The update process to macOS 12 Monterey simply blocked their computers and made them useless. Macs are harder to start when locked, compared to iPhones, iPads, and iPods. In some cases, it will even require physical repair.
The problem seems to mainly affect older Macs, especially those powered by Intel. It’s not as widespread as last year’s disaster in Big Sur, but it still kills enough devices for PSA. If you’re worried or heavily dependent on your Mac for work or study, we suggest you wait for a future update to macOS.
Apple is currently testing macOS 12.1 beta, but is not expected to be released this month as stable to the public. It is unclear whether this version solves the blocking problem, but the assumption is that Apple is aware of the problem, given that Apple’s support has confirmed and responded to some of the tweets.
