What do I think about the scourge of remakes, reboots and all other forms of rape and draining of legendary horror classics that have appeared in recent years, I have written several times. Well, at least horror is a genre that offers endless possibilities and absolutely anything is possible, so it’s all the more incomprehensible to me that the same thing is constantly being recycled. The legendary horror comedy “Evil Dead”, a genius low-budget thrash and an equally entertaining sequel to Sam Raimi’s 1980s, was not deprived of that twist. Back in 2013, the Uruguayan Fede Alvarez shot a remake of “Evil Dead”, where the action also took place in a well-known forest cabin, and a certain Lee Cronin, the screenwriter and director of “Evil Dead Rise”, at least tried to move the story to a different setting.
And occasionally there is an attempt to follow the darkly humorous spirit and style from Raimi’s classics, and the blood here really flows not in streams, but in waterfalls. Again, there will be a good old motorcycle in the game, and this time the action takes place in an old skyscraper scheduled for demolition. Some new kids will find some old mysterious book there, which will turn out to be the famous Book of the Dead or Naturom Demonto. The evil demons will be summoned again by chance, previously the old building in terrible Los Angeles will be shaken by an earthquake and the electricity will go out, and then Ellie (Alysa Sutherland) will attack her three children. younger sister Beth who came to visit her and everyone else in the building.
Mommy’s with the worms now, is the first sentence Ellie will say after being possessed by a familiar demon and the madness can begin. Fortunately, “Evil Dead Rise” isn’t a complete disaster like the recent embarrassing “Halloween” sequels were, maybe because Sam Raimi is the producer and didn’t let some butchers get their hands on his baby. All those who love classic horror, a true horror that in certain scenes even refers to an even more iconic film, Kubrick’s “Shining”, should not be too disappointed.
