A few weeks ago, I found out about this new series “La Brea” which started airing on the HBO Go platform, which immediately intrigued me. But since the episode came out weekly, I had to wait for it to finally be completed before I started watching it. With only 10 episodes I managed to finish it in 1 weekend. So here it goes.
During a normal day in Los Angeles, Eve (Natalie Zea – Justified TV series, etc.) was driving her teenage son Josh (Jack Martin) and Izzy (Zyra Gorecki) to school when a huge hole suddenly appeared in La Brei, knocking down buildings, vehicles and a lot of people too. Eve’s estranged husband Gavin (Eoin Macken – The Night Shift TV series, etc.) was shocked, but believed his family had actually survived the disaster and tried to persuade the government to carry out a rescue mission.
Meanwhile, there were other victims of the hole such as psychiatrist Ty (Chiké Okonkwo), policewoman Marybeth (Karina Logue), student Riley (Veronica St. Clair) and her father Sam (Jon Seda – TV series Chicago PD, etc.), student anthropologists Scott (Rohan Mirchandaney), mysterious guy Lucas (Josh McKenzie), young wife Veronica (Lily Santiago) and her younger sister Lilly (Chloe De Los Santos). As Gavin could not save himself, he proposed to assign his best friend Levi (Nicholas Gonzales – TV series The Good Doctor, etc.) who was a pilot of the US Air Force.
So what actually caused the hole and what happens to the victims? Find them all in this interesting sci-fi series.

La Brea Season 1 Series Review, Plot
I have been a fan of science fiction series for a long time. And this one definitely fit into the category because of the appearance of a mysterious huge hole in the middle of Los Angeles. This kind of series should have a strong start to be interesting, and I thought it was pretty successful at it. It didn’t take too long for the phenomenon to happen and from then on, it was completely intriguing to unravel the mystery.
Having good special effects definitely helps make the series fun. The effects on certain items were amazing as you can see throughout the 10 episodes. For me, the sci-fi element and mystery were some of the factors that interested me in the series. In addition, some of the characters were also interesting. While they may not have the complexities as in other similar series, it gave us the curiosity to find out their background. Btw, most of the permanent series were unfamiliar to me (except Natalie Zee and Nicholas Gonzales), but they generally did their job adequately. What surprised me though was the fact that their time in front of the screen seemed to be pretty balanced, although obviously some were more popular than others.
The series was actually produced by Keshet Studios and Universal Television, but it premiered for the first time on the NBC network. So, this is not an HBO original, which would explain the standard duration of 41 minutes per episode and a very short break in a certain scene for advertising. Almost every episode ended excitedly and that, like the season finale, really excited me for the second season, which has been confirmed since last month. If it weren’t for the renewal confirmation, I probably wouldn’t have tried this series. I just hope he manages to round out the whole story and idea of series creator David Appelbaum (co-producer of The Mentalist and supervising producer of NCIS: New Orleans for a few years). I admired his imagination to create such a story from a real place with wonderful historical value.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been preoccupied with a TV series I really couldn’t stop watching. So I managed to do the first season in just 1 day, albeit late last night. That the series is a novel, this is a real turning point because I really wanted to find out what would happen next. There were even a few shocking twists that were quite stunning, especially in the last episodes. So, if you like sci-fi series with a bit of drama, with good visual effects and some interesting characters with surprising twists, then this one should be fun. It may not be as sophisticated or dramatic as the previously rated sci-fi series, but it’s enjoyable enough. IMDB Series Rating: 5.6 / 10
