PIGGY / CERDITA (2022, ŠPA) – 7/10

Sara (Laura Galan) is an incredibly fat teenager from a small town in the Spanish province. Her weight is not so surprising since her parents are the owners of a butcher’s shop where Sara occasionally works disinterestedly, and the years and years of greasing cracklings, sausages and kulen’s seka have obviously taken their toll. With such a grotesque appearance, Sara is the object of teasing and mockery by other young people in the town, but it has long since clearly crossed the limits of teasing and turned into brutal insults, bullying and abuse. That’s why it shouldn’t be surprising that Sara is complex, withdrawn, lonely, ashamed of herself and practically has no friends, but all those who mistreated her will not have a good time in this metaphorical horror film by debutant Carlota Pereda, who made her debut four years earlier. with the short film of the same name.

One day, Sara will go to the pool, and it will turn into a complete disaster. First for her, because her good-looking acquaintances will not only humiliate her and steal her clothes so that she has to walk across the city in a badic, but also almost drown her. But what happened to her will be seen by an apparently completely deranged stranger, a mysterious guy who happens to be at the pool that same day, and he will kidnap these hot girls. Sara will see what happened, the kidnapper will see her too, but even though the whole town will soon start looking for the missing girls, Sara will not say anything to anyone, considering that what happened to them is what they deserved.

But a problem will arise because this obviously deranged serial killer will not stop there and will continue to terrorize the place, and it seems that he is especially obsessed with Sara. He will start to get closer and closer to her, and very soon this initially combination of black comedy, satire and thriller will turn into a bloody horror. “Piggy” or “Cerdita” in the original had its premiere at the Sundance festival in the Midnight Madness program and it really is the perfect movie for that late-night slot. The modern horror film, which deals with the fairly well-known and always current topics of bullying and body shaming, approaches it in a completely interesting way. At some point, Sara’s wish that all those who mistreat her are dead will begin to come true, but the question is whether Sara really wanted that.
