Steven Spielberg chose a high school student from among 30,000 candidates for the role in his remake a while ago and now we have an official trailer for “West Side Story” movie remake.
American director Steven Spielberg chose an unknown now 20-year-old Rachel Zegler from New Jersey for the role of Maria Vasquez in her remake of the musical “West Side Story”.
Back then Steven chose Zegler among more than 30,000 girls at the audition.
The high school student from Clifton posted a picture of herself and other members of the lineup on Instagram and expressed her gratitude that she was chosen.
She says that she could not imagine that she would get that role, since she played Maria in the theater a few years ago.
Ansel Elgort was chosen as the boyfriend when she fell in love with the adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical, a contemporary story about Romeo and Juliet set among street gangs in New York.
In the 1961 film, the role of Maria was played by Natalie Wood, and Tony, the boyfriend whom Richard Beymer loves. That film won ten Oscars.
