The Batman is the latest film adaptation of the famous superhero of the same name from the DC universe. As a director and co-screenwriter, he signed Matt Reeves, who removed Batman’s earlier connections with the expanded DC universe, introduced his (neglected) detective side into the screenplay, and gave the lead role to Robert Petinson. After two delays due to the kovid pandemic, the film premiered on February 23 in London, and the people of Warner Bros. in collaboration with HBO are planning two sequels to this film and two television series.
The Batman 2022 review, plot
Batman (Robert Petinson), who is publicly known and just as famous as retired billionaire Bruce Wayne, has been in a kind of sociological experiment for two years to determine whether the fight against crime has any concrete benefits for Gotham City. When Ridler (Paul Dayno), a sadistic serial killer, starts killing key political figures in the city, Batman, with the help of detective James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and butler Alfred (Andy Serkis), is forced to reveal his true identity, to investigate hidden corruption in the city. , as well as how it all relates to his parents.
The main villain is conceived as a serial killer with zodiac-like codes, elaborate traps and a leather mask, but the story also has room for Penguin (unrecognizable Colin Ferrell), the right hand of mafia boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturo). There is also Selina Kyle (Zoe Krewitz), who initially searches for her missing roommate and is Batman’s ally if necessary, except that she disagrees with the way the corrupt Goths should be punished for everything they caused in the city.
This film seems significantly different from other Batman adaptations, but also other superhero films in general. Not only because it is based on a tangible, sometimes unpleasant sense of reality, but also because the script understands the appeal, meaning and deeper issues related to the very basis of Batman – the authors dissect the core of the character, his enemies, allies and the whole Gotham. In this way, they use a simple, but also somewhat ambitious approach to storytelling in which, although the film lasts three hours, they take away everything that is irrelevant or superfluous.
The script is not directly related to any previous version of Batman or the larger universe of which he is a part, but it exists in the cultural memory of all these previous variations. Before watching this movie, we all knew who Batman was, who Bruce Wayne was, how he lost his parents and so on, so there is no need to talk and this time he deals with the usual things related to the origin of Batman.
The key to the film’s success and the reason it stands out from the plethora of stories about superheroes that have flooded the cinema repertoire in recent years is that Reeves approaches the recognizable superhero formula with completely sincere seriousness. Contrary to my expectations, this is not a classic superhero film, but above all a clever, atmospheric thriller about conspiracy, corruption and murders, in whose thematic mold the character of Batman fits perfectly.
The narrative is direct and straightforward, but quite extensive. It lasts for three hours, which is noticeable in some scenes, but on the other hand, the longer duration and slower pace allow us to see the dirty metropolitan realism of the Goths. The city looks like a gloomy, rainy nightmare that seems like a real location, and not like some stylized version from the comics – throughout the film, we feel a heavy atmosphere of doom from all sides, which grips both the city and the characters.
We have not been deprived of spectacular scenes such as the one with the chase on the highway, but it is nice to see that the film about the superhero cares more about the atmosphere of the story, its characters and plot than about the special effects. I liked that the action sequences and skillfully realized fight scenes are secondary in the story itself, that is, they exist exclusively to be in the service of that story.
Although there has been a lot of dust around the election of Robert Petinson as the new Batman, I must admit that this actor has done more than a great job, especially as a retired Bruce Wayne who does not care about his wealth or public image. Since this is the beginning of the trilogy, he is left with space to grow with the character. Like him, all the other characters who represent really great actors are wounded or broken people who are trying to make something out of the world that broke them.
The Batman is a long-awaited, ambitious film adaptation of a story about a famous superhero that looks like it was signed by David Fincher – a darkly realistic and astonishingly naked noir that is miles away from a template movie about superheroes. Final grade: 9/10. Release date March 4, 2022 (United States). The Batman 2022 runtime 2h 55m.
